Is Your SUV Aligned?

Long drives can put extra demands on an SUV, especially when the route includes highways, uneven pavement, and winding roads. Before setting off, it is worth checking how the vehicle steers and how its tires meet the road.
Small changes in handling may seem unimportant during everyday driving, but they can become more noticeable over several hours behind the wheel.

1. The SUV Pulls to One Side

A vehicle that consistently drifts left or right on a reasonably level road may have an alignment problem. Drivers might find themselves making frequent steering corrections just to maintain a straight path. This can become tiring on a long journey, when steady concentration is essential.
Wheel alignment refers to the adjustment of the angles at which the wheels meet the road and relate to the vehicle. When these angles move outside the recommended specifications, the SUV may no longer track straight as intended.
However, alignment is not the only possible cause of pulling. Uneven tire pressure, tire damage, and brake problems can produce similar symptoms. Check the tire pressures against the manufacturer's recommendations and arrange an inspection if the vehicle continues to drift.

2. The Steering Wheel Sits Crooked

When driving straight on a level road, the steering wheel should generally sit close to its normal centered position. If the SUV travels straight while the steering wheel remains noticeably tilted, the wheel alignment or steering geometry may need attention.
This symptom can appear after hitting a deep pothole, striking a curb, or driving over a rough surface. Such impacts may affect suspension or steering components, so the cause should not automatically be assumed to be a simple alignment adjustment.

3. Tire Tread Wears Unevenly

Tires can provide useful clues about the condition of an SUV. When the wheels are not aligned correctly, certain areas of the tread may wear faster than others. For example, one edge may become noticeably smoother while the opposite edge retains more tread.
Inspect all four tires, including the inner and outer edges where visible. A flashlight can help reveal differences that are difficult to spot at a glance. Also look for unusual patterns, such as patches of accelerated wear or a tread surface that feels uneven. Incorrect alignment is one possible explanation, but tire pressure, worn suspension parts, and inadequate tire maintenance can also contribute.

4. The SUV Feels Unstable on the Highway

An SUV should feel reasonably composed when traveling at normal highway speeds. If it wanders within its lane, requires constant steering adjustments, or feels less settled than usual, an inspection may be necessary before a lengthy drive. Incorrect alignment can influence directional stability, but other issues may create similar sensations.
Pay attention to when the problem occurs and whether it becomes worse over time. If the SUV feels difficult to control, vibrates severely, or suddenly changes direction, avoid continuing a long journey until the cause has been assessed. A vehicle that does not respond predictably deserves attention before it is taken onto busy roads.

5. Steering Feels Different After an Impact

A pothole or curb strike can change how an SUV handles, even when the damage is not immediately obvious. After a strong impact, the steering may feel off-center, the vehicle may begin pulling to one side, or new tire noise may appear.
A visual check can reveal obvious damage, but it cannot confirm that every steering or suspension component remains within specification. Alignment measurements are often needed to determine whether the wheel angles still match the manufacturer's requirements.

What to Check Before Leaving

A few simple checks can make pre-trip preparation more effective. Confirm that all tires have the recommended pressure, examine their tread for unusual wear, and look for visible cuts, bulges, or other damage. Check that the steering feels normal during an ordinary drive and pay attention to any new noises or vibrations.
If an alignment inspection is recommended, ask the workshop to check the suspension and steering components as well. Adjusting wheel angles alone will not solve a problem caused by damaged or worn parts. Following the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance guidance also helps ensure that any necessary repairs are completed before departure.
Addressing these symptoms early can reduce the chance of unexpected maintenance during a journey. If the SUV shows persistent steering problems or signs of damage, arrange a professional assessment before traveling. A careful inspection helps ensure the vehicle is ready for the distance ahead.
